Shaorong Chen, Ph.D.
Dr. Shaorong Chen brings to Dunlap Codding more than seven years of experience in patent prosecution, client counseling, due diligence, patent portfolio management, patent license negotiation, freedom-to-operate analysis, patent validity opinions and patent opposition. Before starting her legal career, Shaorong had worked in chemical and textile industries for more than ten years. Her areas of technical expertise include chemical product and process development, organic chemical synthesis, catalysis, polymerization, distillation, crystallization, chemical vapor deposition, coal gasification and liquefaction, applications of specialty chemicals and polymers, fiber spinning and dyeing, upholstery furniture manufacture and treatment, carpet manufacture, treatment and cleaning, and pharmaceutical ingredients and formulation.
Shaorong started her technical career as a research engineer and later became a senior research engineer and a technical group leader at E.I du Pont de Nemours & Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Her research led to the development and commercialization of new catalysis processes and chemical products for nylon intermediates and specialty chemicals. For her outstanding achievement, she was awarded 2000 DuPont Market Excellence Recognition. Her research initiatives led to numerous patents and development of new consumer products in the cosmetic field and textiles. She has authored numerous scientific articles and presentations and has presented her research both nationally and internationally.
In 2003, Shaorong joined the Legal Department of INVISTA (formerly DuPont Textiles & Interiors) as the Intellectual Property Manager, managing a patent portfolio of more than five hundred patents and applications. During this period, Shaorong has gained significant experience in in-house IP management, handling everything from invention disclosure, invention evaluation, infringement detection, product and process clearance, filing strategies and protection of confidential information and trade secrets, patent prosecution in US and international, to legal opinions regarding patentability, infringement and validity.
Before joining Dunlap Codding, Shaorong practiced at Tessari Patent Law Group, pllc and Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz, LLP, where she further developed skills in patent prosecution, client counseling, and patent litigation.
Shaorong is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin).
